FAD prize 2014 list of finalists & jury comments (ENG, CAT, ESP)

The FAD awards were created in 1958 with the aimo of promoting the avant-gard tendencies of the time and to acknowledge high quality works in the new paths and investigations that were opening up and transforming the traditional forms and languajes of design. Since 2006 five branches of conceptually different kind of works are eligible to receive awards: architecture, interior design, temporary interventions, thought and criticism, and city & landscape.
Arquinfad is the interdisciplinary design association of the FAD (Foment de les Arts i el Diseny = Fostering Arts & Design). It is an independent, non-profit, cultural association created as an umbrella organisation to support all professionals and institutions engaged in spatial work, in the broadest sense. Architects and designers were involved from the start, and the association has more recently welcomed new professionals from highly specialised disciplines such as set or lighting design and the design of ephemeral spaces…

Respect for the old stone architecture and for the town is not a hindrance to producing a new architecture with a merit of its own.”

“The most valued part of the hog is the ham, treated and cured with skill. The refurbishment of the butcher’s shop is an example of finely managed boldness, energy and provocation. It recovers traditional materials in bright colors and orthogonal floors cohabiting with implacably whitened irregular stonework. Its purpose is to display the star product – the hams – for sale within an area whose architecture is simple, clean and direct; the interior unwittingly ends up enhancing the exterior.”
“El producte més preuat del porc és el pernil, elaborat i curat amb precisió. La renovació de la carnisseria és atreviment, energia i rauxa ben administrada. Recupera materials tradicionals de colors vius i paviments ortogonals que conviuen amb un paredat irregular implacablement emblanquinat. L’objectiu, mostrar per a la venda el producte estrella del porc en un recinte d’arquitectura simplista, neta i directa; l’interior sense voler acaba vestint l’exterior.“
